ok so the story starts as them being deputy but they become leader in chapter 3 so like. yeah that explains the stuff. they have depression and really really did not expect or want the position of deputy, so when (spoilers but not really) lightstar dies, theyre like "well fuck" because theyre clan leader, and they dont want to be, sucks for them. they just really miss their dead wife.
